Pension advice in Reading, Wokingham and Berkshire

Pensions can feel complicated because the decisions matter. Charges, investment choices, guarantees, tax rules and timing can all affect the income you live on for decades.

At rockwealth Reading, we start with your goals and your wider financial picture. Only then do we look at which pension options - consolidation, drawdown, a SIPP, or simply leaving things as they are - are suitable for you.

Many clients arrive with a handful of old workplace pensions they have not looked at in years. We carry out a pension review to understand what you actually have: charges, fund performance, any valuable guarantees, and how each pension fits your plans. From there we can advise on whether consolidation makes life simpler, taking into account any valuable guarantees worth preserving.

Your pension advice sits inside your wider Financial MasterPlan. We review what you have, model what it can provide, and connect your pensions with retirement planning, tax, spending and family priorities.

We use the same disciplined, evidence-based approach to pension investments and SIPPs that guides our investment advice - low-cost, globally diversified portfolios grounded in decades of research, not guesswork. When it comes to taking your pension, we plan drawdown and tax-free cash carefully alongside your personal allowance and other income, so withdrawals are as tax-efficient as possible.

Our founder, Nick Hutchings, is a Chartered Financial Planner and an Accredited SOLLA (Society of Later Life Advisers) adviser. That matters most when pension decisions intersect with later life - funding care fees, supporting a partner, or thinking about inheritance tax planning for what is left in your pension.

Built-in tools that keep your pensions aligned

Pension Reviews & Consolidation

Multiple pension pots from different employers can make it hard to see the whole picture. We review charges, fund performance, investment choices and any valuable guarantees before deciding whether bringing them together makes sense for you.

SIPPs, Drawdown & Tax-Efficient Extraction

Taking income from a pension needs discipline. We model flexible drawdown through a SIPP, weigh it against an annuity, and sequence withdrawals alongside tax-free cash, your personal allowance and other income so more of your money stays yours.

Common pension questions

Should I consolidate my pensions?

Sometimes, but not automatically. We review each pension's charges, investment options, flexibility and any guarantees first - some older workplace pensions carry valuable benefits worth keeping, while others can be simplified into one well-managed plan as part of your wider financial plan.

What is a SIPP and is it right for me?

A Self-Invested Personal Pension gives you wider control over how your pension is invested and how income is drawn in retirement. SIPPs suit people who want flexible drawdown and a tailored, evidence-based investment strategy, but they are not automatically better than a workplace pension - it comes down to your goals, the charges involved and how you plan to take your income.

How do I take my pension tax-efficiently?

Most pensions allow some tax-free cash, with the rest taxed as income when withdrawn. The order and timing of withdrawals matters - drawing too much in one year can push you into a higher tax band unnecessarily. We plan withdrawals around your personal allowance and other income sources as part of your retirement planning, and point clients to official GOV.UK guidance on pension tax where helpful.

What about the state pension?

We check your National Insurance record and state pension forecast as part of every pension review. If there are gaps, we help you weigh up whether voluntary contributions are worth making alongside your private pension plans.

When can I access my pension?

Most personal and workplace pensions can be accessed flexibly from age 55, rising to 57 from 2028, though some schemes have different rules. Being able to access a pension and it being the right time to do so are two different questions - we help you work out which income sources to draw on, and when, as part of a coordinated retirement income plan.

I asked for Nick's help after my husband died suddenly. Nick helped me to get my financial affairs in good order and has continued to be available to me in the eight years since. I have every faith in his advice and feel very reassured by him.

I have been advised and supported by Nick Hutchings, now with Rockwealth for several years and have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone seeking financial advice. He has always shown an understanding of my situation and finances as they have changed with time and provided supportive advice in line with these changes. He doesn't push ideas but simply offers them up and gives me the insight I need to make my decisions. Whether I move forward with them or not I never feel that I am failing myself or letting him down if that makes sense. Additionally I would be remiss if I didn't mention and thank Alex Young, Nick's colleague. His prompt, positive and simplified responses to my often inane questions really do remind me that I and my finances are in safe, competent hands.

Rockwealth helped me arrange a Lifetime Care Annuity for my mother. Sounds so simple when put like that - the reality was that Nick's professionalism and care made the whole end-to-end process much easier and simpler than it could have been. I'm happy to recommend Rockwealth and wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
